Fukuti Sinroku was an ex-military policeman, who betrayed his sister's husband and made him die. His sister reproached him to run mad. Repenting of it, he tried to reevaluate Enomoto Takeaki, the last admiral of Tokugawa navy, who was regarded as a mean traitor without samurai spirit at all. In Bosin War(1868-70), although Tokugawa's navy was superior to Emperor's one, Enomoto avoided a decisive battle to bring the fleet to Ezo (Hokkaido) and founded the Republic of Ezo concentrating stragglers. When Emperor's forces invaded Ezo, he destroyed his own army and surrendered at once. He was arrested but released in a few years. He became a superior officer of the Emperor's government. Fukuti found unknown manuscripts, which revealed that Enomoto was ironical man.
